What is Benchmarking?

Benchmarking is a quality improvement tool commonly used in healthcare, business and industry, but is relatively new in higher education. The goal of benchmarking is to identify best practices by comparing data across programs that provide similar services. Best practices are those practices that have been shown to be most effective in producing a specified set of desired outcomes (such as effective instruction or low attrition rates).
